Bewitching Perception
Bewitching Perception is a recorded mixed-media performance exploring the intricate relationship between media consumption, societal chaos, and humanity’s darker narratives. Central to the piece is a sculptural installation featuring a paper-mâché tree layered with newspaper clippings depicting stories of tragedy—mass shootings, governmental failures, and societal unrest. Painted shadows emphasize the collective trauma embedded in these stories, creating a haunting visual landscape.

At its core is a custom-built video mixer housed in a vintage Brownie camera shell. This mixer combines found nature footage and clips from The Witching (1987) pictured below. These projections surrounding the installation weave a layered exploration of how natural and societal narratives are perceived and distorted. The auditory experience adds depth, featuring reflective cassette loops infused with Alan Watts’ The Nature of Consciousness: Part 1. The visuals and soundscape encourage viewers to meditate on awareness, existence, and humanity’s role in shaping chaotic narratives.
